I really wanted to do a couple of recipes using hot dogs. My original thought was that hot dog recipes should be easy, since hot dogs are easy. After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, I decided that more than one hot dog recipe was overkill. I decided to go with a pigs in a blanket recipe. I am including a recipe for wrapping, but if you're pressed for time or just don't feel like you have the baking prowess, you can easily purchase some pre-made croissant dough and cut it to the appropriate size.

Ingredients:

~12-16 oz dough (see recipe below or purchase pre-made croissant dough)
1 package hot dogs (cut in half)
~4-6 oz gouda cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Cut dough so it's about 1 inch wide and about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long. Wrap each hot dog half in the dough. Place on a greased tray.

Bake tray of pigs in a blanket for about 15-20 (or according to pre-made dough instructions) until golden brown. Remove tray from over but keep on. Cut gouda into about 1/2-3/4 inch squares. Place squares on top of pigs in a blanket. Replace in oven for about 3 more minutes until cheese begins to melt.

Notes:

Here is a quick recipe for the dough that I used.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups white flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup corn meal
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp oil

Mix all of the dry ingredients first, then begin to slowly mix in the wet ingredients. After you reach a uniform consistency, begin to add in flour or water 1 tbsp a time as needed to make either more or less moist. You want the consistency to be relatively firm and not too sticky as if you were making biscuits.

I'm going to be honest, I don't really have that recipe dialed all the way in yet. I didn't exactly consider it a brilliant success my first time through. With that in mind, I recommend pre-made dough from the store. It makes things easier, quicker and more reliable.
