First!
I figured since I added three new blog sections, I should make sure to post to them today so I don't end up with random blogs that I don't touch for 8 months and then just delete when I decided to completely revamp my blog all over again.
My band's name is 10 to 7. You can find pages on Myspace and Facebook. We have some extremely rough -- ok, 'rough' isn't an appropriate descriptor. We have a couple of flat-out awful recordings that we did in a living room months ago on the Myspace page. But it does give a general idea of what the music sounds like.
I'm relatively new to the band having joined as a vocalist about 6 months ago. The band has a little bit of a bumpy history with vocalists. The original intent was for a female vocalist and three times that just didn't seem to pan out. I was brought it after our last female vocalist had been with us for a little while. The plan was to offer breadth or sound, creativity and style. Unfortunately the other vocalist didn't work out and I was the last "monkey hanging onto a branch" as our guitarist might put it.
Lately we seem to be moving at light speed with 8 hour practice sessions, 11 hour recording sessions and regular performances around town. We're working out a lot of local networking to use contacts for performance opportunities for us and other bands.
The first two questions people ask me when they find out I'm in a band are:
1) What do you play?
2) What kind of music do you play?
Well, as I have said, I am the vocalist, but we're toying with the idea of having me play some rhythm guitar. Make no mistake, I am horrible at guitar and hold no illusions of being some guitar dynamo. We will be very careful to make sure that my guitar fits in with the sounds, style and quality of the band or I will not play.
The style or genre of music is hard to explain, so I'll give the long explanation so it's up here for reference. There are a lot of different influences at work in our band. I sang in a punk band a number of years ago and tend to lean in that direction when it comes to vocal style. We also have a veteran punk guitarist/bassist playing bass for us. When he and I have any input, we generally lean toward punk. Our guitarist definitely a child of the 90's alternative rock movement. However, he tends to blend sophisticated, folksy lyrics with his alternative rock guitar rhythms. You combine this with my collaboration on vocals/lyrics and you get an interesting blend. We have an amazing 21-year-old guitarist that I can only imagine will get even better with time. She is a fan of hard rock and has the skill set to match her influences. She tends to lean into a harder rock edge bordering on metal at times if left to her own devices, but rest assured that she definitely has an extremely versatile ability to write drum lines that can match the mood and style of any song thrown at her. To finish off the group we have a keyboardist that was self-trained playing classical music then new-age. Self-described as a new-age keyboardist, he definitely brings an eclectic tint to the band. He is making strides to bring in a rock piano sound while coloring the music with his own unique style.
So there you go, welcome to the music section of my blog. Hopefully I will have much, much more to say for a long time to come.
